UPSC New Chairman: Ex-IAS and former Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan has been appointed the UPSC New Chairman. President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of Preeti Sudan as a new chairman for UPSC (Union Public Service Commission), under clause (1A) of Article 316 of the Constitution, with effect from August 1, 2024, until further orders or April 29, 2025, whichever is earlier.

Who is the UPSC New Chairman Preeti Sudan?

UPSC New Chairman Preeti Sudan is a 1983 batch ex-IAS officer from the AP cadre and served as the Union Health Secretary during the COVID-19 pandemic. She retired in July 2020. Her career has been marked by a series of high-profile assignments, including serving as the Health Secretary of India. Known for her administrative acumen and commitment to public service, Sudan’s appointment is expected to bring new vigor and efficiency to the UPSC.

Preeti Sudan’s Appointment Process

The UPSC New Chairman is appointed by the President of India, following the sudden resignation of the former UPSC Chairman Dr. Manoj Soni. The UPSC secretary, in a letter, stated that the President has accepted the resignation of Dr. Manoj Soni, who resigned due to personal reasons. The letter also mentioned that President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of Preeti Sudan as the Chairman of the Commission. 

Preeti Sudan will assume office on August 1 and will continue until further orders or until April 29, 2025, whichever comes earlier, as per the letter. Her appointment follows this tradition, ensuring that the UPSC continues to maintain its reputation for fairness and transparency in the recruitment process.
