SpaDeX Mission: ISRO Successfully Docks Satellite in Space

The SpaDeX Mission (Space Docking Experiment) is a groundbreaking initiative by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aimed at demonstrating and advancing critical space docking technologies. The Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has recently made headlines for its historic accomplishment of successfully docking two satellites in space. Now, India has become the fourth country to achieve this major milestone.

SpaDeX Mission Made A Historic Achievement

The SpaDeX mission reached its historic milestone just days after ISRO’s successful trial attempt on January 12, 2025. In this trial, two spacecraft were maneuvered to a distance of three meters and then safely placed back at a greater distance, simulating the docking process.

After the United States, Russia, and China, India has achieved of milestone by adding its two satellites to the Space Docking Experiment.

ISRO shared the detailed docking process on its ‘X’ account:

  1. The process began with reducing the distance between the spacecraft from 15 meters to a 3-meter hold point.
  2. The docking mechanism was then initiated with precision.
  3. A successful spacecraft capture was followed by smooth retraction and rigidization to ensure stability.

SpaDeX Mission

This mission is a milestone in India’s space exploration capabilities, aligning with global advancements in satellite servicing, interplanetary missions, and space station operations.

SpaDeX Launch Details

The SpaDeX mission was launched aboard the PSLV C60 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The rocket carried:

  • Two small satellites: SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), each weighing approximately 220 kg.
  • 24 additional payloads for various experimental purposes.

Fifteen minutes after liftoff, the spacecraft was placed into a 475 km circular orbit, initiating the preparations for the docking experiment.

Prime Minister and Many Other Congratulated

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many congratulated ISRO and the entire space fraternity, calling the mission “a significant stepping stone for India’s ambitious space missions in the years to come.” His post highlighted the importance of this achievement in shaping India’s future space exploration and development.
