Recently, a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report found high levels of faecal coliform bacteria in the water. 

Water Quality Concerns

• Massive Influx: Around 45 crore visitors have attended the Maha Kumbh Mela. High population density increases the risk of disease transmission.
• Monitoring: The Ganga at Prayagraj is a major site for ritual bathing and drinking. The CPCB monitors water quality, showing fluctuations in contamination levels.
• Faecal Contamination Levels: Makar Sankranti (Jan 14):
• • Sangam Ghat: 11,000 units of faecal coliform (limit: 2,500).
  • Old Naini Bridge Ghat: 33,000 units in Yamuna.
  • Other Days: Levels dropped as low as 200-780 units.
• Findings: January 12-13: Water unfit for bathing and drinking. Freshwater intrusion upstream helped reduce organic pollution. High faecal contamination spikes observed on auspicious bathing days.
• Water Quality: CPCB data shows consistent contamination, not just during Kumbh Mela. Water at Prayagraj remains unfit for consumption throughout the year. Bathing suitability varies based on water flow and dilution levels.
• Denialism: UP CM  dismissed scientific findings as “baseless.” Contradicts CPCB and National Green Tribunal (NGT) reports.

Conclusion

National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) aims to restore river health. Uttar Pradesh must lead cleanup efforts, being the largest beneficiary. Science and faith must coexist—ignoring pollution risks public health.
