International Firefighter’s Day History and Significance

International Firefighters’ Day was established after the tragic deaths of five firefighters in a wildfire in Victoria, Australia, in 1998. The day was proposed by JJ Edmondson, a volunteer firefighter, to honor their memory and recognize the sacrifices made by firefighters globally.​

May 4th was chosen as it is the feast day of St. Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. St. Florian was a Roman officer who organized firefighting brigades and is remembered for his courage and dedication to protecting lives.
