Guru Nanak was known to be spiritually inclined from an early age, as he was found to be more interested in spiritual discussions and topics. He quickly became learned in Sanskrit, Persian, Hindi, and the holy texts of religions with help from his sister, Bebe Nanki.

He gained enlightenment on the banks of Vain Nadi (the dry riverbed) at the age of 30, later uttering the words “There is no Hindu, no Musalman” to mark the unity of mankind and God. He is said to have then travelled across India, South Asia, Tibet, Persia, and Arabia over four major journeys (Udasis), lasting 30 years in total, to share his ideas about the equality of all people, oneness of God, and the need for seva (service).
He was accompanied by his companion Bhai Mardana on his journeys and they together visited temples, mosques, and religious centres all over, speaking out against meaningless rituals, social evils, and superstitions.
