UPSC Punjabi Literature Optional Subject Structure

In the structured framework of the UPSC Civil Services Examination, candidates are required to choose optional subjects for the main stage, and Punjabi Literature emerges as a distinguished choice among literature options. UPSC Punjabi Literature Exam Pattern  

Similar to other optional subjects in the UPSC optional subject list, Punjabi Literature comprises two papers, Paper I and Paper II, with each paper carrying a total of 250 marks. Both papers are segmented into two sections. Each paper presents a total of eight questions, equally divided into four questions per section. Candidates are required to attempt five questions in total. Question 1 and Question 5 are compulsory. From the remaining six questions, candidates must choose any three to attempt, ensuring at least one question is answered from each section. It’s imperative that answers must be written in Punjabi in Gurumukhi script.

  2. Punjabi morphology; the number-gender system (animate and inanimate), prefixes, affixes and different categories of Post positions; Punjabi word formation; Tatsam. Tad Bhav. forms; Sentence structure, the notion of subject and object in Punjabi; Noun and verb phrases. 
  3. Language and dialect: the notions of dialect and idiolect; major dialects of Punjabi: Pothohari, Majhi, Doabi, Malwai, Paudhi; the validity of speech variation on the basis of social stratification, the distinctive features of various dialects with special reference to tones Language and script; origin and development of Gurumukhi; Suitability of Gurumukhi for Punjabi. 
  4. Classical background: Nath Jogi Sahit. Medieval Literature: Gurmat, Suti, Kissa and Var: janamsakhis.
