Kailasavadivoo Sivan, commonly known as Dr. K. Sivan, is an accomplished Indian space scientist and administrator who has made significant contributions to the field of space technology and exploration. Born on April 14, 1957, in Mela Sarakkalvilai, a village in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, India, he emerged from humble beginnings to become a pivotal figure in India’s space program.

Coming from a modest background, Sivan’s early education took place in a Tamil medium school. He often mentioned that he wore footwear for the first time when he entered college at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). This institution became a stepping stone for his academic journey. In 1980, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering from MIT.

Driven by his passion for aerospace engineering, Sivan continued his studies at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore. In 1982, he earned a master’s degree in aerospace engineering, further honing his expertise in the field. His determination and commitment to learning paved the way for his later accomplishments.

He played a pivotal role in the development of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mark III, often referred to as ISRO’s most powerful rocket. The successful launch of the Chandrayaan-2 mission, India’s second lunar exploration mission, showcased the efficacy of his work, as the GSLV Mark III employed cryogenic engines for the mission’s success.

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mark III, India’s most potent rocket, which successfully carried out the Chandrayaan-2 mission in July, relies on cryogenic engines for propulsion.
