Section-Wise Analysis:

  • Indian Economy: Economics comes out as one of the most formidable subjects in the UPSC Mains GS Paper 3. It covers a wide range of topics from recent economic development to sustainable development, inflation, unemployment, multilateral trade, and much more.
  • Agriculture: Agriculture and allied sectors is the topic of great interest for UPSC. This year too, the UPSC covers sections like cropping patterns, subsidies, e-Technology in welfare of farmers etc.
  • Internal Security: Management of security, peace, law and order and upholding the sovereignty of the country is always a concerned area from which UPSC asks four to five questions every year. This year questions varied from terror funding, role of Investigative Agencies, Border management to conflict resolution in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Science and Technology: Science & Technology is one of the most important sections with respect to UPSC Main GS paper 3. However, for this section, it is important to have a theoretical understanding of the static syllabus to write effective answers. This year themes like Alternate Fuel, Artificial Intelligence, Space Mission etc makes paper more dynamic in nature.
  • Environment and Ecology: This subject is one of the most dynamic parts in UPSC Mains GS3. However, the static section of this paper also holds great weightage. This year UPSC asks questions from both the static and dynamic part of the subject. The questions on recent findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC), Wetland conservation and Marine pollution follow the trend of recent years.
  • Disaster Management: The frequent natural disasters ranging from earthquakes, floods, drought, etc. makes this topic worthwhile. This year UPSC asks a few questions like Dam safety on this topic.
