Artemis II Mission Sets Record for Farthest Human Spaceflight from Earth

NASA’s Artemis II mission, which is travelling around the far side of the moon, has set a new record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from Earth.

  • The Orion spacecraft, carrying four astronauts, reached about 252,752 miles from Earth during a flyby of the Moon’s far side, surpassing the Apollo 13 record of 248,655 miles set in 1970.
    • Four astronauts are: Americans Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian Jeremy Hansen.

About Artemis II Mission

  • Artemis II is the first crewed mission under the NASA-led Artemis programme, marking humanity’s return to deep-space exploration beyond low Earth orbit.

Key Features

  • Organisations Involved: NASA & Canadian Space Agency (CSA)
  • Free-Return Trajectory: The mission will follow a free-return trajectory, utilising the gravitational forces of the Earth and the Moon to ensure a safe return path without requiring major propulsion burns.
  • Deep Space Testing: Artemis II will conduct comprehensive testing of critical systems, including life support, navigation, communication, radiation protection, and manual piloting in a deep-space environment.
  • Distance Milestone in Human Spaceflight: Astronauts are expected to travel over 230,000 miles from Earth, marking the farthest distance ever reached by humans in space.
  • Mission Duration and Recovery: The mission is planned for approximately 10 days, culminating in a controlled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean for crew recovery.
  • Lunar Flyby: The mission involves a flyby of the Moon, without landing.
  • Crewed Mission: First human mission beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo era.
  • Launch Architecture and Propulsion System: The mission will employ the Space Launch System (SLS)
    • It is capable of generating approximately 8.8 million pounds of thrust, making it about 15% more powerful than the Saturn V used during the Apollo era.
  • AVATAR Experiment: The AVATAR (A Virtual Astronaut Tissue Analog Response) experiment will utilise advanced organ-on-a-chip technology, incorporating cells derived from the astronauts themselves.
  • Global Participation: The mission reflects strong international cooperation, with CubeSats from Germany, Argentina, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia—being deployed to conduct experiments on radiation shielding, space weather.
