Artificial General Intelligence

In a recent paper titled, “An Approach to Technical AGI Safety and Security”has  proposed a framework for technical Artificial General Intelligence safety and security.

  • Published By: The paper was published by researchers from DeepMind (Google’s AI lab)
  • The paper was hopeful about the development of powerful AGI systems by 2030

About Artificial General Intelligence

  • Definition: AGI  is defined as, “artificial intelligence that is not only specialized to carry out specific tasks, but can learn to perform as broad a range of tasks as a human.”

Origin of AGI

  • The British mathematician and father of theoretical computer science, Alan Turing first proposed the concept and provided one of the earliest and most influential definitions of machine intelligence in his 1950 paper, “Computer Machinery and Intelligence.”
    • The core of his argument was that intelligence can be defined by behavior, rather than mystical philosophical qualities.
  • The “Turing Test”: It is based on a simple party game called the Imitation Game where a human observer must read text samples and determine whether they were generated by a human or by a machine.
    • He proposed if human cannot distinguish between the program’s output and another human’s output, the program can be said to demonstrate human-like intelligence.

  • Levels of AGI: In a paper published in 2023, DeepMind researchers identified five ascending levels of AGI.
    • Emerging: It is the first level which is equal to or somewhat better than an unskilled human
      • The 2023 paper noted that only the first level, Emerging AI, had been achieved.
    • Competent: The intelligence level is at least 50th percentile of skilled adults
    • Expert: The intelligence level is at least 90th percentile of skilled adults
    • Virtuoso: The intelligence level is at least 99th percentile of skilled adults
    • Superhuman: The level at which the machine outperforms 100% of humans.

Benefits of AGI

Artificial General Intelligence

  • Raise Living Standards: AGI if deployed safely, widely and cost-effectively, has the potential to raise living standards across the world in two particular ways.
    • Driving Innovation: AGI can drive economic growth and prosperity by contributing to faster, more cost-effective innovation yielding significant social returns
    • Better Education and Health: AGI could provide personalized, adaptive experiences, making high-quality education and healthcare more accessible and effective for people of all backgrounds.
  • Accelerating Scientific Discovery:  AI models has the potential to capture complex scientific concepts and ideas and enable novel discoveries and unprecedented mathematical problem solving capabilities accelerating scientific discovery.
  • Lowering Barriers to Innovation: AGI could democratize enhanced information processing capability and access to knowledge at unprecedented scale substantially lowering  barriers to innovation and creativity.
