The Technology Development Board (TDB) (under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India)  has extended financial support to BatX energies (Gurugram based Startup) for the commercialisation of an indigenous battery recycling technology.

  • This innovative process will help in the sustainable recycling of lithium-ion batteries, contributing to India’s clean energy and circular economy goals.

About Black Mass Recovery Technology

  • Technology Overview: The black mass recovery technology is designed to extract valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel from used lithium-ion batteries. 
    • The process utilizes a dual-mode (wet and dry) system, ensuring high separation efficiency.
    • The end-to-end process, including collection, shredding, metal leaching, and downstream purification, is indigenously developed and patented.
  • High Recovery Rates: The technology ensures recovery rates of up to 97–99%, making it highly efficient in reclaiming essential minerals from end-of-life batteries.
  • Sustainability and Impact: This process significantly reduces the reliance on mining and import for these critical minerals, contributing to sustainability and supporting the circular economy.

  • Black mass is a dark, powdery substance found inside used lithium-ion batteries.
  • It is a mix of critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese
  • It can be recovered, refined, and reused in the production of new batteries.
