Chandrayan-5

The Central Government has approved Chandrayaan-5, India’s next ambitious lunar mission.

About Chandrayaan-5

  • Approval Date: March 13, 2025
  • Collaboration: Joint mission between ISRO and Japan
  • Objective: Advanced study of the Moon’s surface.
  • Payload:
    • It will carry a 250 kg rover (significantly larger than Chandrayaan-3’s 25 kg rover ‘Pragyan’).
    • Designed to perform detailed surface analysis and experiments on the lunar terrain.
  • Focus: Strengthening India’s lunar exploration capabilities with international cooperation.

Significance

  • Enhances India’s position in global space research and lunar exploration.
  • Marks a shift towards heavy payload rovers, enabling more complex experiments.
  • Strengthens Indo-Japan space cooperation, a key diplomatic and technological partnership.
  • Supports India’s goal of contributing to global lunar science and potentially participating in future lunar resource utilization missions.
  • Lays groundwork for human missions and deeper space exploration.

Chandrayaan-3

  • Launch Date: July 14, 2023; Successful soft landing on Moon’s south pole on August 23, 2023.
  • Key Features:
    • Vikram lander and 25 kg Pragyan rover.
    • Demonstrated India’s capability in soft-landing and roving on the lunar surface.
    • Focused on scientific experiments on lunar soil, surface composition, and seismic activity.

Chandrayaan-4

  • Planned Launch: 2027
  • Objective:
    • Lunar sample return mission – first attempt by India to collect and bring back lunar soil and rock samples.
    • Strengthens India’s technological edge in complex space missions.

Possible Future Projects

  • Gaganyaan (Manned mission)
  • Establishment of Bharatiya Antariksh Station (India’s own space station).
