During Singapore PM Lawrence Wong’s visit to India, Singapore acknowledged India’s interest in patrolling the strategically vital Malacca Strait, marking a new phase in bilateral and Indo-Pacific cooperation.
- PM Modi and PM Wong held talks in New Delhi, signing five agreements covering energy, trade, and technology.
- India’s plan to join the Malacca Straits Patrol (MSP) was highlighted, aiming at coordination with existing members – Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
- Discussions also included green shipping, semiconductor ecosystem building, defence technology, and counter-terrorism cooperation.
Key Outcomes of the Meeting
1. Strategic & Security Cooperation
- Singapore endorsed India’s interest in Malacca Strait patrols, a chokepoint critical for global trade and energy supply.
- Defence technology collaboration in quantum computing, AI, automation, and unmanned vessels.
- Joint work on maritime security, submarine rescue operations, and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).
- Strengthened cooperation in FATF against cross-border terrorism.
Malacca Strait – Geostrategic Importance
- Location: Connects the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) with the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean)
- Chokepoint: One of the busiest maritime passages in the world; ~60% of global trade & oil shipments pass through.
- India’s Stakes: Proximity to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, key to India’s maritime strategy and security.
- Challenges: Piracy, trafficking, terrorism, and China’s growing influence in the region.

Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI)
- It is a non-treaty-based voluntary arrangement that promotes cooperation for a free and open Indo-Pacific and the rules-based regional order.
- Genesis: It was launched by India in 2019 at the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Bangkok (Thailand).
- Singapore is an active partner in IPOI, particularly in maritime security and digital economy cooperation.

2. Green & Digital Economy
- MoU on green energy export from India to Singapore through dedicated ports.
- Green & digital shipping corridor for sustainable maritime trade.
- National Centre of Excellence for skilling in advanced manufacturing to be set up in Chennai.
3. Infrastructure & Trade
- Virtual inauguration of PSA Mumbai–Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal.
- Cooperation in civil aviation R&D and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul).
- Semiconductor sector prioritised – Singapore to help set up design & fabrication clusters in India.
Semiconductors
- Materials whose electrical conductivity lies between conductors (metals) and insulators (rubber, glass).
- Key Property: They conduct electricity under certain conditions (temperature, light, voltage) and act as insulators under others.
- Common Materials: Silicon (Si) and Germanium (Ge) are the most widely used.
- Doping: Adding controlled impurities modifies their conductivity – Creating p-type (positive) and n-type (negative) semiconductors.
- Building Blocks: Basis of diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits (ICs).
- Applications:
-
- Computers, smartphones, and microprocessors.
- Solar cells (convert sunlight into electricity).
- LEDs and lasers.
- Power devices, sensors, and communication systems.
- Importance: They form the backbone of the modern digital economy and emerging technologies like AI, IoT, and 5G.
