India will unveil its first Red List of Endangered Species at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi from October 9–15, 2025.
About India’s Red List
India’s inaugural Red List of Endangered Species will provide a comprehensive assessment of the country’s threatened flora and fauna.
It aims to guide conservation strategies, inform policy decisions, and raise public awareness about biodiversity loss.
The list represents a major step in aligning India’s wildlife conservation efforts with international standards.
About the IUCN Red List
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List is the world’s most authoritative inventory of the global conservation status of species.
It assesses species based on their risk of extinction, helping governments, scientists, and conservationists prioritize efforts.
Categories in the IUCN Red List
Extinct (EX) & Extinct in the Wild (EW): No individuals remain globally (Ex) or in the wild (EW).
Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU): Varying levels of high to moderate risk of extinction.
Near Threatened (NT) & Least Concern (LC): Species at low or potential risk.
Data Deficient (DD) & Not Evaluated (NE): Insufficient information for assessment or yet to be assessed.
IUCN World Conservation Congress
It is held once every four years, bringing together over 1,400 government, civil society, and Indigenous members to set global conservation priorities.
It serves as a platform for sharing science, policy, and innovation in biodiversity protection.
