About Handloom Sector

• The handloom sector is cottage industry, producing textiles through manually operated looms while preserving traditional weaving skills and providing large-scale rural employment.

• • Civilisational Heritage: India’s handloom tradition dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization and historically produced globally renowned textiles such as Bengal Muslin, Banarasi Silk and Kanchipuram Silk.

Current Status of the Handloom Sector in India

• Largest Cottage Industry: India’s handloom sector supports the livelihoods of over 35 lakh weavers and allied workers, with nearly 72% being women, making it one of the country’s largest rural employment generators.
• Export: Handloom exports reached approximately ₹1,330.96 crore in 2025–26.
  • The United States and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) rank as the largest import markets globally.

Government Initiatives to Support Handloom Sector

• Strong Government Support: The Government has strengthened the sector through 797 handloom clusters, over 1.24 lakh improved looms, and skill upgradation for nearly 97,000 artisans.
  • The government vision is to enable every weaver to earn a dignified and aspirational income, with the ambition of ₹50,000 per month.
• Growing Institutional Ecosystem: 29 Weavers’ Service Centres provide training, design support, raw materials and market linkages, while 11 Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology promote advanced technical education.
• Technology-led Modernisation: Initiatives such as Handloom 4.0, VisioNXT, the Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology, and improved loom technologies like Maina Loom and Chitranjan Handloom are enhancing productivity and market competitiveness.
