TU Wien Sets Guinness Record with World’s Smallest Ceramic QR Code

Recently, researchers at TU Wien (public technical university) in Austria have set the Guinness World Record for creating the world’s smallest QR code using ceramics.

  • Guinness World Record: On December 3, the team set a Guinness World Record with a 2 μm² QR code, smaller than a bacterium and one-third the size of the previous record.

About QR Code (Quick Response Code)

  • A QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in both horizontal and vertical directions enabling it to hold significantly more data than traditional barcodes.
  • It was developed in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave.

  • Colloboration: The project was led by Paul MayrhoferErwin Peck and Balint Hajas.
  • Limitations of Conventional Storage: Current storage solutions like hard drives and magnetic tapes last around 10 to 30 years so researchers invested in ceramics.
  • Ion beam milling Method: Researchers abandoned traditional printing technologies and adopted atom-scale engineering to create the QR code, specifically using a technique known as focused ion beam milling.

Ion Beam Milling Method

  • Ion Beam Milling is a nanofabrication technique in which a focused beam of high-energy ions, usually gallium, is directed onto a material surface to remove atoms with extreme precision.
  • It is a non-contact method widely used in semiconductor manufacturing and nano-patterning of ceramic films like Chromium nitride.

About Ceramics

  • Ceramics are inorganic, non-metallic materials made by heating and then cooling naturally occurring raw materials like clay, silica, and alumina.
    • They can also be engineered at the nanoscale for advanced applications (like in nanotechnology).

Key Properties of Ceramics

  • High Strength and Hardness: Ceramics are very hard and strong, which makes them resistant to wear and scratching.
    • For Example: Alumina ceramics used in cutting tools and armor plates.
  • Thermal Stability: They can withstand extremely high temperatures without deforming.
    • For Example: Zirconia ceramics in jet engine components.
  • Chemical Resistance: Ceramics are resistant to corrosion and oxidation, even in harsh chemical environments.
    • For Example: Ceramic tiles used in chemical plants.
  • Electrical & Magnetic Properties: Depending on composition, ceramics can be insulators, semiconductors, or even conductors.
    • For Example: Barium titanate used in capacitors and sensors.
  • Wear and Durability: They have high wear resistance and can last much longer than metals in abrasive conditions.
    • For Example: Ceramic coatings in industrial machinery and engines.

How Ceramic-Based Storage is Better than Magnetic Storage?

  • Longer lifespan: Magnetic media last 10–30 years; ceramic storage can survive for centuries or millennia.
  • Zero-energy storage: Data is physically etched, requiring no power for preservation.
  • No data rot: Unlike magnetic states that degrade, ceramic engravings are permanent.
  • Environment-resistant: Withstands heat, water, corrosion, and electromagnetic interference.
  • Lower carbon footprint: Reduces dependence on energy-intensive data centres.

Applications of Ceramics

  • Traditional: Pottery, tiles, bricks, porcelain
  • Engineering & Industry: Cutting tools, armor, aerospace components
  • Advanced/Nanotechnology:
    • Nanoscale ceramics for data storage (like the world’s smallest QR code)
    • Biomedical implants (e.g., hip joints)
    • Electronics (capacitors, superconductors)
