Daily Current Affairs 8 April 2026 highlights important developments across governance, environment, economy, and science. Key updates include large-scale voter list revisions in West Bengal, Mission Mitra training for Gaganyaan astronauts in Leh-Ladakh, and Stage One Forest Clearance granted for the Puri airport project under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. The NSO also launched the first-ever ASISSE survey to strengthen service sector data for policymaking.
Further UPSC-relevant topics include environmental concerns around the Kozhikode-Wayanad Tunnel Project in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats and new insights into octopus biology, particularly the hectocotylus arm used in reproduction. The compilation also includes mains answer angles and a Prelims quiz to enhance exam-oriented preparation.
India witnessed diverse developments in environment, space, economy, infrastructure, and science.
Elections are underway in various parts of India, including West Bengal. A Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process led to the deletion of approximately 91 lakh names from the voter list. Initially, 63 lakh names were removed, followed by an additional 27 lakh names, totaling 91 lakh names deleted. This indicates a roughly 12% reduction in electors compared to 2021, when 7.34 crore voters were eligible.
The majority of these deletions occurred in districts like Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, and Malda. Individuals whose names were removed can apply to 19 appellate tribunals for re-inclusion. However, even if re-included, these voters will only be eligible for future elections, as the deadline for the current April 23rd and 29th elections has passed.
Mains Angle: Discuss electoral reforms, challenges in voter list accuracy, and implications on democratic participation.
Mission Mitra, short for Mapping of Interoperable Trades and Response Assessment, is a crucial initiative for the Gaganyaan Mission. The Gaganyaan Mission aims to send Indian astronauts, known as Gaganyatris, to space.
Its primary purpose is to prepare these Gaganyatris for the extreme conditions of space. This comprehensive training covers mental resilience, physical adaptability, effective communication with ground control, sharp decision-making, and coping with challenges like low temperatures, oxygen deficiency (hypoxia), and isolation.
The training occurs in Leh-Ladakh at an altitude of approximately 3500 meters above mean sea level. This high-altitude location simulates space-like conditions, offering very low temperatures, reduced oxygen levels, and isolation.
The mission is a collaborative effort involving ISRO, the Institute of Aerospace Medicine of the Indian Air Force, and Proto Planet Private Limited, Bengaluru. The four designated Gaganyatris are Shivanshu Shukla, Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, Ajit Krishnan, and Angad Pratap.
Mains Angle: Examine India’s human spaceflight program and the role of advanced training in strategic technological development.
The Sri Jagannath International Airport project in Puri, Odisha, seeks to boost connectivity for tourists and pilgrims. This project requires diverting approximately 27 hectares of forest land.
Stage One Forest Clearance represents an in-principle approval for diverting forest land for non-forest purposes. It is a mandatory requirement under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Approving authorities include the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and its regional offices.
Key conditions for Stage One Clearance include:
Meeting these Stage One conditions allows the project to proceed to Stage Two for final approval, after which construction can start. Recent amendments to the Forest Conservation Act (2023-24) introduced certain exemptions and simplified regulations for specific projects, such as strategic projects near international borders (within 100 km), defense infrastructure, linear projects, small land patches, and security-related infrastructure.
Mains Angle: Analyze the balance between infrastructure development and environmental conservation in India.
The service sector is vital to India’s economy, contributing over 50% of the GDP and creating significant employment. Historically, there was no comprehensive database for the formal, incorporated service sector.
To address this, the National Statistical Office (NSO) has launched the Annual Survey of Incorporated Service Sector Enterprises (ASISSE) for the first time. The term ‘Incorporated’ refers to companies or Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) registered under the Companies Act or the LLP Act.
The purpose of ASISSE is to create a comprehensive database of incorporated service sector enterprises to inform policy-making. The survey covers various services, including trade, transport, hospitality, Information Technology (IT), education, and healthcare. Its methodology involves sampling data from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) for the Financial Year 2024-25.
The NSO is authorized to conduct such surveys under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, and the Jan Vishwas Act, 2023.
Mains Angle: Evaluate the importance of data-driven policymaking in strengthening India’s service sector economy.
This project involves constructing a tunnel to connect Kozhikode and Wayanad in Kerala, aiming to reduce travel time, ease congestion, and improve regional connectivity.
However, the project faces several key concerns:
Regarding legal rulings, the Kerala High Court, in Wayanad Prakriti Samrakshana Samithi vs. State of Kerala, allowed the project to proceed but stressed the need to minimize environmental damage.
The Supreme Court declined to intervene, advising petitioners to approach the National Green Tribunal (NGT) if environmental violations occur. The project entails an 8.73 km long twin-tube, unidirectional tunnel, executed by the Kerala State Government.
Mains Angle: Critically examine infrastructure projects in ecologically sensitive areas with reference to sustainable development
Octopuses are highly intelligent marine creatures, recognized for their soft bodies and agile movement. Approximately 300 known species exist globally, including the Giant Pacific Octopus, Common Octopus, Blue-Ringed Octopus, and Dumbo Octopus.
Biologically, octopuses are carnivores, feeding on smaller fish and crustaceans. They employ various defense mechanisms, such as releasing ink and mastering camouflage, which allows them to change color, shape, and even texture to blend seamlessly with their surroundings. They also exhibit excellent problem-solving skills, memory, and high cognitive capabilities
The conservation status of octopus species varies, with some listed as ‘Least Concern’ and others as ‘Data Deficient’ by the IUCN, due to insufficient data.
Recent research has revealed that male octopuses possess a specialized arm called a hectocotylus. This arm’s function is to identify females, facilitate sperm transfer, and chemically sense females by detecting hormones like progesterone. This unique adaptation enables male octopuses to effectively locate females even in dark marine environments.
Mains Angle: Highlight the importance of biodiversity studies and marine biology in ecological conservation.

Stage One Forest Clearance is an in-principle approval granted for diverting forest land for non-forest purposes, as required by the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. It involves conditions like Compensatory Afforestation and Net Present Value payment.
The primary objective of Mission Mitra (Mapping of Interoperable Trades and Response Assessment) is to prepare Indian astronauts (Gaganyatris) for the extreme conditions of space, covering mental resilience, physical adaptability, and decision-making for the Gaganyaan Mission.
ASISSE is significant because it is the first-time comprehensive survey of India's formal, incorporated service sector. It aims to create a crucial database to inform and support policy-making in this vital economic sector.
The main environmental concerns for the Kozhikode-Wayanad Tunnel Project include its passage through the ecologically fragile Western Ghats and proximity to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, raising fears of biodiversity loss, ecosystem disruption, and potential landslide risks from tunneling vibrations.
