The oceans have a considerable variety of landscapes, very similar to the continents. There are mountains, basins, plateaus, ridges, canyons, and trenches beneath the ocean water too. These relief features found on the ocean floor are called submarine relief. The Ocean basins are broadly divided into four major sub-divisions. They are: (a) the continental shelf; (b) the continental slope; (iii) the Deep Sea plain; and (iv) the Oceanic Deeps. Besides these divisions, there are also minor relief features in the ocean floors like ridges, hills, seamounts, guyots, trenches, canyons, etc.

The Halocline is a layer in the ocean where the salinity changes rapidly with depth. The Thermocline is a layer where the temperature changes rapidly with depth. The Pycnocline is a layer where the density changes rapidly with depth. It encompasses both the halocline (salinity gradients) and the thermocline (temperature gradients). Because density is a function of temperature and salinity, the pycnocline is a function of the thermocline and halocline.

The continental slope connects the continental shelf and the ocean basins. It begins where the bottom of the continental shelf sharply drops off into a steep slope. The gradient of the slope region varies between 2-5°. The depth of the slope region varies between 200 and 3,000 m. The slope boundary indicates the end of the continent. Submarine Canyons and trenches are observed in this region. Continental slopes, mainly due to their steepness and increasing distance from the land, have very little sediment on them. The marine life is also less in the continental slope as compared to the  continental shelf. Abyssal plains are extremely flat and featureless plains of the deep ocean floor.
