• Quality Concerns: Rapid expansion may encourage institutions to meet only minimum National Medical Commission (NMC) standards, affecting the quality of medical education.
• Capitation Fees: Despite legal prohibition, capitation fees continue in some institutions, increasing financial burden and influencing career choices after graduation.
• Rural Healthcare Deficit: Inadequate salaries, housing, infrastructure, and career incentives discourage graduates from serving in rural areas.

Way Forward

• Strengthen Affordable Medical Education: Expand government medical colleges, including AIIMS-like institutions, to increase affordable MBBS seats.
• Strict Regulation: Effectively enforce the NMC norm requiring 50% of seats in private colleges at government fee levels, along with surprise inspections and stronger regulatory oversight.
• Promote Rural Service: Complement mandatory rural postings with financial incentives, career progression, quality infrastructure, housing, and education facilities for healthcare professionals.
• Ensure Quality Standards: Strengthen accreditation, periodic evaluation, and faculty development to maintain uniform standards across medical institutions.
