Why UGC Discontinued MPhil Degree?

Context: This article is based on an Editorial “MPhil imbroglio” which was published in the Tribune. Following the New Education Policy-2020’s push for education system reform, the two-year MPhil degree was discontinued in 2020 by the University Grants Commission.

However, some universities have been found to take admissions of students in M.phil.

The rationale behind Discontinuation of Mphil degree was to reduce the students’ time and cost spent in obtaining a PhD degree.

Issues with Higher education System

Political Interference: Public universities have become favor-dispensing mechanisms for the ruling governments that have been blatantly interfering in academic affairs and appointment processes.
Lack of Funds: Underfunding is the other bane of the sector, affecting both the teachers and pupils as innovation and the quality of human resources take a hit
- Contrast to it there should be scope of dissent, fair appointments and more funding for higher education instituions.
