An obsession with ranking is harming India’s universities

In today’s digital age, the trend of quantifying education is on the rise, with global ranking agencies evaluating and ranking universities annually. Many believe this focus on rankings undermines the quality and integrity of higher education.

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is employed in India to evaluate and rank universities based on various parameters.

Role of a University

  • Education and Mentorship: Universities are responsible for teaching and mentoring future citizens.
  • Knowledge Creation: Research and teaching are two sides of the education coin: knowledge creation and dissemination.
    • Knowledge Dissemination: Universities play a critical role in spreading knowledge that was gathered through research to society.
  • Social and Economic Impact: Universities enhance social mobility and economic growth by providing education, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and serving as cultural hubs, significantly impacting both social structures and overall development.

Challenges with Current Ranking System

  • One-Dimensional Focus: The global university ranking system predominantly prioritises research activities, creating a one-dimensional evaluation framework that overlooks other essential aspects of education.
  • Skewed Emphasis on Research: These rankings heavily focus on quantifiable metrics such as the number of published papers and research funding. This emphasis fosters a culture where research output becomes the primary indicator of a university’s worth, often marginalising the importance of teaching.
  • Marginalisation of Teaching: As a result, job candidates are evaluated primarily on their research metrics, undermining the crucial role of educators, whose primary function should be to nurture and mentor students.
  • Adoption of American Education Model: India’s adoption of the American education model, influenced by market principles, has intensified these challenges.
    • Initiatives like the Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) aim to boost global rankings, often compromising educational quality and shifting universities’ focus towards visibility rather than student education.
  • Consequences for Faculty and Students: The focus on research has created an environment where faculty members feel pressured to prioritize publications over mentorship.
    • This “publish or perish” mentality neglects accountability and quality in education, ultimately detracting from student learning experiences.
  • Research Misconduct: The intense pressure to publish and achieve high rankings can lead to unethical research practices, including manipulation and plagiarism.

Positive Implications of Current Ranking System

  • Enhanced Visibility: A strong world ranking increases a university’s visibility on a global scale.
  • Attracting Talent: Higher rankings help attract international students, top-tier faculty, academic partners, philanthropists, and donors.

Conclusion

Universities must recognize that while research papers are essential for scientific progress and economic development, factors like impact scores and journal rankings should not overshadow the core mission. Teaching and mentoring should be valued equally, as universities play a crucial role in both the creation and dissemination of knowledge.
