Outcomes of G20 Summit 2024

The G20 Summit 2024 which was held in Rio de Janeiro has addressed several pressing global issues, that is culminating in notable outcomes and initiatives:

Climate Change Finance

While the summit aimed to reinvigorate climate action, the final declaration fell short of concrete commitments. Leaders agreed on the need for substantial increases in climate finance from billions to trillions but avoided specifying the contributors or timelines. A pledge for a fair transition from fossil fuels was notably absent.

Ukraine Conflict

The war in Ukraine heavily influenced discussions. G20 leaders supported initiatives that have promoted a “comprehensive, just, and durable peace,” without explicitly criticising Russian aggression. Chinese and Brazilian leaders emphasized peace negotiations, with the G20 collectively rejecting the use of force for territorial gains.

Ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon

The summit recommended comprehensive ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon. Leaders supported adherence to UN resolutions while promoting humanitarian relief and the safe return of displaced populations. These efforts reflected a delicate balance among G20 members with differing stances on the conflicts.

Taxing Ultra-Wealthy Individuals

A significant milestone was the commitment to enhance tax policies targeting the super-rich, championed by Brazilian President Lula da Silva. While respecting tax sovereignty, the G20 recognized the need for anti-tax avoidance measures and global cooperation.

Global Alliance Against Hunger

President Lula’s initiative to combat global hunger gained attraction, with 82 nations signing onto a coalition. The alliance aims to implement proven strategies to reduce hunger and extend support to half a billion people by 2030.

These outcomes were highlighted in the G20 Summit 2024 while addressing global challenges, though the absence of more definitive action in areas like climate change and conflict resolution highlighted the complexities of multilateral cooperation.

Motto of G20 Summit 2024

The motto for the G20 Summit 2024 is “Building a just world and a sustainable planet.” This motto highlights the urgent need for measures that are socially appropriate, environmentally sustainable, and economically useful. In 2024, the G20 focuses on addressing inequality in all its forms which makes it a central theme of the global agenda.

G20 Presidency

The G20 Presidency sets the agenda for one year and hosts the Summit, with two parallel tracks: the Finance Track and the Sherpa Track. The Finance Track is led by Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, while Sherpas, personal emissaries of the Leaders, lead the Sherpa Track. Both tracks have thematic working groups involving representatives from member countries, invited nations, and international organizations.

The Sherpas coordinate negotiations and oversee the G20’s substantive work. Engagement Groups connect civil societies, businesses, and other sectors.

The G20 has no permanent secretariat, with the Presidency supported by the Troika—comprising the previous, current, and incoming Presidencies.
