IFoS Prelims Syllabus 2027: Prelims and Mains Syllabus, Exam Pattern

The Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Examination is one of the most prestigious competitive exams conducted by UPSC for candidates aspiring to join India’s environmental and forest administration services. The IFoS Prelims Syllabus 2027 forms the first stage of this highly competitive selection process and is conducted along with the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination.

Since the prelims stage is a screening test, understanding both the syllabus and exam pattern is extremely important. It helps candidates focus on high-weightage topics such as environment, geography, polity, and current affairs while also improving accuracy in aptitude-based questions. A clear understanding of the structure ensures better preparation planning and improves the chances of qualifying for the mains examination.

IFoS Prelims Syllabus 2027

The IFoS Syllabus 2027 is designed to test both general awareness and analytical thinking. It is broad in nature and requires consistent preparation across multiple subjects.

General Studies Paper I Syllabus

Paper I covers a wide range of topics that assess a candidate’s knowledge of national and international issues.

The major areas include:

  1. Current Affairs
National and international events, government schemes, environmental developments, and global issues.
  2. History of India and Indian National Movement
Ancient, medieval, and modern history along with freedom struggle movements.
  3. Indian and World Geography
Physical geography, climate, natural resources, and environmental geography.
  4. Indian Polity and Governance

  7. General Science
Basic concepts of physics, chemistry, and biology relevant to everyday understanding and current developments.

CSAT Paper II Syllabus

CSAT is designed to test logical and analytical abilities rather than subject knowledge.

Key areas include:

  • Reading comprehension passages
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Basic numeracy (Class 10 level mathematics)
  • Data interpretation
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills

Although qualifying in nature, CSAT requires practice as many candidates fail to clear the minimum cutoff due to lack of preparation.

How to Prepare for IFoS Prelims 2027

Effective preparation for IFoS Prelims requires consistency, conceptual clarity, and regular practice.

  • The first step is to build strong NCERT fundamentals, especially in geography, polity, and science. These subjects form the base of most questions.
  • Next, candidates should focus on daily current affairs preparation, as a significant portion of Paper I is based on recent developments.
  • Regular practice of previous year question papers is also important to understand the exam pattern and difficulty level.
  • For CSAT, candidates must focus on regular aptitude practice, especially comprehension and reasoning, as it is qualifying but compulsory.
  • Finally, consistent revision is key to retaining concepts, especially in environment and ecology, which are highly important for IFoS aspirants.
