For 150 years, India was under the rule of the British Empire, governed by the East India Company, a trading entity established in Surat, Gujarat in 1619.
After their win at the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the East India Company gained control over the nation.
Notable freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Chandra Shekhar Azad, and many others actively contributed and fought for India’s independence.
In 1947, the Quit India Movement played a pivotal role in prompting the British to leave the country.
On this day in 1947, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi, officially declaring India’s independence from British colonial rule. This historic act symbolized the culmination of years of struggle, sacrifice, and the tireless efforts of freedom fighters.
The 77th Independence Day continues to uphold the values of unity, diversity, and patriotism that are deeply rooted in India’s history. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought bravely for the nation’s freedom. The celebrations include the hoisting of the national flag, cultural events, and patriotic speeches that reflect the progress India has achieved since its inception as a sovereign nation.
