The 10th edition of the India International Science Festival (IISF) will take place at IIT Guwahati from November 30 to December 3, 2024, marking a significant milestone as the festival reaches the Northeast for the first time. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, announced this at a press briefing at the National Media Centre, New Delhi.

India International Science Festival 2024: Northeast to Host First-Ever India International Science Festival at IIT Guwahati

IIT-Guwahati will host the India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024, celebrating scientific achievements from November 30 to December 3. A highlight of the event will be a massive 10-meter-high replica of the moon, built to commemorate the success of the Chandrayaan mission. Organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with Vijnana Bharati, the festival aims to promote science and innovation across India.

India International Science Festival 2024 Theme: Science and Innovation in Focus

With the theme “Transforming India into an S&T-driven Global Manufacturing Hub,” IISF-2024 aims to promote science-led industrial growth. The festival will highlight advancements in biotechnology, bioeconomy, and space technology, reinforcing India’s ambitions under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.

Dr. Singh emphasized that this festival aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering the Northeast’s development, placing it at the center of India’s scientific progress. IIT Guwahati—a premier institute—symbolizes the region’s emergence as a hub for innovation, helping bridge connections between the Northeast and the rest of India.

Empowering the Region and Youth

The event reserves 30% of registrations for participants from the Northeast, providing opportunities for local talent to engage with renowned scientists and innovators. Young minds will have a chance to participate in competitions and experience cutting-edge innovations, sparking new aspirations in science and technology.

“This platform will fuel discussions shaping India’s future as a global leader,” said Dr. Singh, urging visitors to explore the Northeast’s vibrant culture, natural resources, and sustainable practices. The festival also aims to foster collaborations among scientists, industry leaders, and students, focusing on global challenges such as climate change, food security, and sustainable development.

Collaborative Efforts

IISF-2024 is being organized by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in coordination with several ministries and Vijnana Bharati. With India’s rapid progress in areas like space exploration and digital technology, the festival reaffirms the nation’s commitment to becoming a scientific and manufacturing powerhouse.

As Dr. Singh concluded, “This festival is not just about celebrating science—it’s about positioning the Northeast as a crucial player in India’s future growth.”

  • Aim: To celebrate the achievements of India in the frontier areas of science and technology. 
    • To acknowledge the achievements of science enthusiasts and inculcate scientific temper among young students and spread the same among the Indian citizens.

    • India International Science Festival aims to offer a myriad of benefits to people by serving as an educational and inspirational platform.

  • Organiser: The event is coordinated by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), National Innovation Foundation (NIF) – India, and Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA).
  • Date: India International Science Festival will start from January 17, 2024 and will end on January 20, 2024. 
  • Venue: India International Science Festival will take place at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) – Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) campus in Faridabad, Haryana.

  • Significance of IISF-2024: The event holds interface among all stakeholders through various activities such as seminars by national and international experts, interactions with speakers, exhibitions, competitions, workshops, knowledge-sharing activities, technology shows, etc.
  • IISF 2024 will have a total of 17 themes to showcase scientific achievements offering diverse benefits to participants and the general public.

Student Science Village
  • The Student Science Village program, an initiative in the India International Science Festival (IISF).
  • Aim: To provide students with an opportunity to explore and engage with science in a fun and interactive way, inculcating scientific temperaments, creativity, and innovations, thereby, promoting scientific literacy, critical thinking and encouraging youngsters to pursue careers in STEM.
STEAM
  • Science through Games & Toys STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) are crucial for developing a future-ready workforce. 
    • It is essential that children develop interest in these subjects during early years of school education. 
    • Science-based games and toys act as a bridge, making these subjects more accessible and enjoyable, instilling a passion for STEAM from a young age. 
    • They highlight the significance of science in daily life. 
    • These tools help children to appreciate fundamental scientific principles and foster curiosity and critical thinking. 
    • India has a rich heritage of such toys that can aid in the development of skills like maths, sensory development, and hand-eye coordination.
Face to Face with New Frontiers of Science & Technology’ program
  • It offers direct interactions between students/researchers and eminent personalities par excellence in various S&T fields including academia, research, and industry. 
  • Aim: To motivate youth to lead India’s advancements in science and technology, positioning the nation as a global leader in S&T. 
  • This initiative encourages students to pursue careers in research and science.
National Social Organizations and Institutions Meet (NSOIM)
  • It is a crucial component of the India International Science Festival (IISF), serving as a platform to unite stakeholders in societal development.

Student Innovation Exhibition

Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA)

  • The Government of India established the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) in November 1999. 
  • The PSA’s office aims to provide pragmatic and objective advice to the Prime Minister and the cabinet in matters of Science and Technology. 
  • The Office of PSA was placed under the Cabinet Secretariat in August, 2018.
  • Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood is currently serving as the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
