UNESCO World Heritage List

  • UNESCO World Heritage List is a catalog of cultural, natural, and mixed sites recognized for their Outstanding Universal Value. 
  • It highlights heritage of global significance, ensuring its protection and preservation for all humanity.
  • At present, the list includes 1,248 properties across 170 States Parties. 
  • These include 972 cultural, 235 natural and 41 mixed properties. 
  • The World Heritage Convention, adopted in 1972, has been ratified by 196 States Parties, making it one of the most widely accepted global heritage-protection instruments.

India’s Position

  • India has 44 World Heritage Properties, comprising 36 cultural, 7 natural and 1 mixed property (As of March 2026).
  • Recently the Government has also sent two proposals to the World Heritage Centre for future consideration: Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath for 2025–26 and Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Charai (Living Root Bridges) Cultural Landscape for 2026–27
  • The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertakes conservation and maintenance of 3,686 monuments, including 27 World Heritage properties.

 

Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP)

 

  • Definition: Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is the total monetary value of all goods and services produced within a state over a financial year. It represents the economic size, growth, and productivity of a state, similar to GDP at the national level.
  • Components: 
    • Agriculture & Allied Activities: Crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries.
    • Industry: Mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity, water supply.
    • Services: Trade, transport, IT, finance, real estate, public administration.
  • Measurement: 
    • Nominal GSDP: At current market prices; reflects actual monetary output.
    • Real GSDP: Adjusted for inflation using constant prices; indicates real growth.
  • Significance: 
    • Serves as an indicator of a state’s economic strength and sectoral composition.
    • Helps in policy formulation, fiscal planning, and inter-state comparisons.
