The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) follows the standard nationality conditions prescribed for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

To meet the IRS nationality criteria, a candidate must belong to one of the following categories:

  1. A citizen of India.
  2. A subject of Nepal or Bhutan.
  3. A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  4. A person of Indian origin (PIO) who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Note: Candidates belonging to categories 2, 3, and 4 must possess a valid certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Indian Revenue Service Educational Qualification

The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) requires candidates to meet a basic educational standard set by UPSC. This ensures that all applicants have a strong academic foundation, regardless of their background.

  • Minimum Educational Qualification: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university established under an Act of Parliament, State Legislature, or recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  • Eligible Disciplines: There is no specific requirement for a specialised degree. Graduates from engineering, medicine, commerce, humanities, sciences, or management are all equally eligible.
  • Final Year Students: If you are in your final year of graduation or awaiting final results, you are eligible to apply for the preliminary round of the Indian Revenue Service Exam.
  • However, you must present your graduation passing certificate or mark sheet during the submission of the Detailed Application Form (DAF) for the UPSC Mains stage.

Indian Revenue Service Age Limit 2027

The age criteria for the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) are an important eligibility condition that candidates must carefully follow. For the 2027 examination cycle, the age is calculated as on 1st August 2027.

A candidate must be at least 21 years old and should not be more than 32 years old for the general category. However, UPSC provides age relaxation for reserved categories as per government rules.

Indian Revenue Service Age Limit
Category Minimum Age Limit Maximum Age Limit (with Relaxations)
General / EWS 21 Years 32 Years
Other Backward Classes (OBC) 21 Years 35 Years (3-year relaxation)
Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) 21 Years 37 Years (5-year relaxation)
Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwBD) 21 Years 42 Years (10-year relaxation)
Ex-Servicemen / Commissioned Officers 21 Years 37 Years (Up to 5-year relaxation)

The candidate’s date of birth recorded in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate is the only document accepted by the UPSC to verify the Indian Revenue Service Qualification and Age Limit.

Indian Revenue Service Attempt Limit

Along with age criteria, UPSC also limits the number of attempts a candidate can make for the Civil Services Examination. An attempt is counted the moment a candidate appears in at least one paper of the Preliminary Exam.

The number of attempts varies based on category:

  • General / EWS: 6 attempts
  • OBC: 9 attempts
  • PwBD (General, OBC, EWS): 9 attempts
  • SC / ST: Unlimited attempts (only restricted by the upper age limit)

Phase 2: Mains Examination

This stage is descriptive and includes 9 papers in total:

Phase 3: Personality Test (Interview)

Candidates who clear the Mains are called for a 275-mark interview conducted by a UPSC panel. This stage evaluates personality, decision-making ability, communication skills, and overall suitability for public service.

The final selection is based on the combined marks of the Mains exam and Interview, out of a total of 2025 marks.
