IPS Age Limit 2027: Category-wise Age Relaxation, Eligibility & Attempts

IPS age limit 2027 is one of the most important eligibility conditions for candidates planning to appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Every year, many aspirants are unsure about the minimum and maximum age limits, category-wise relaxations, and date of birth criteria, which can lead to confusion during the application process.

Based on the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 Notification, the age criteria for IPS 2027 are expected to remain the same unless revised in the official UPSC CSE 2027 notification. Understanding these eligibility conditions beforehand allows candidates to determine their eligibility and prepare confidently for the examination.

IPS Age Relaxation 2027

While the upper age limit for General category candidates is 32 years, UPSC provides age relaxation to candidates belonging to eligible reserved and special categories. The extent of relaxation differs for each category as prescribed in the official notification.

Category-wise IPS Age Relaxation 2027

Category Upper Age Relaxation
Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribe (ST) 5 Years
Other Backward Classes (OBC) 3 Years
Defence Services Personnel disabled during operations 3 Years
Ex-servicemen (including ECOs/SSCOs with qualifying service) 5 Years
ECOs/SSCOs completing initial military service 5 Years
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) 10 Years

Candidates with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) are eligible for age relaxation as per UPSC rules, subject to the prescribed medical standards. Where permitted, candidates belonging to multiple eligible categories may also avail of cumulative age relaxation.

IPS Date of Birth Eligibility 2027

UPSC specifies the age eligibility through a fixed date of birth range instead of only mentioning the age limit. This makes it easier for candidates to determine whether they fall within the permissible age bracket for the examination.

For the IPS Exam 2027, candidates must satisfy the following date of birth criteria.

Category-wise Date of Birth Eligibility

Category Date of Birth Eligibility
General Age Limit Born not earlier than 2 August 1995 and not later than 1 August 2006

Candidates should ensure that the date of birth mentioned in their matriculation or secondary school certificate matches the details entered in the UPSC application form.

IPS Eligibility Criteria 2027

Meeting the prescribed age limit alone does not make a candidate eligible for the Indian Police Service. Aspirants must also fulfill several other eligibility conditions related to educational qualification, nationality, and other requirements specified by UPSC.

Before submitting the application, candidates should carefully verify that they satisfy every eligibility criterion to avoid rejection during document verification or later stages of the selection process.

IPS Educational Qualification 2027

To apply for the IPS examination through the UPSC Civil Services Examination, candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree from:

  • A university incorporated by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature; or
  • An educational institution established by an Act of Parliament; or
  • A university declared as a deemed university under the UGC Act; or
  • An equivalent qualification recognised by the Government of India.

Candidates who are appearing in the final year of their qualifying degree examination may also apply for the Civil Services Examination, provided they produce proof of passing the examination within the timeline specified by UPSC before the personality test.

IPS Eligibility After Graduation

Graduation is the minimum educational qualification required for becoming an IPS officer. There is no restriction regarding the stream of study, which means candidates from Science, Commerce, Arts, Engineering, Medical, Law, or any other recognised discipline are eligible to appear for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Since the examination tests analytical ability, decision-making, and general awareness rather than subject-specific knowledge, graduates from diverse academic backgrounds compete successfully every year.

IPS Nationality Criteria

To be eligible for IPS, a candidate must be a citizen of India. Candidates belonging to other nationality categories permitted for certain Civil Services are not eligible for appointment to the Indian Police Service, as IPS is one of the All India Services requiring Indian citizenship.

IPS Physical Eligibility

Qualifying the UPSC Civil Services Examination is only one part of the IPS selection process. Since the Indian Police Service is a uniformed service, candidates allotted to IPS must also meet the prescribed physical and medical standards. These standards are verified during the medical examination conducted after the personality test and play an important role in the final appointment.

The physical eligibility criteria include parameters such as height, chest measurements, and vision standards. Candidates are advised to understand these requirements well in advance to ensure they meet the eligibility conditions.

IPS Height Requirement

Height is one of the key physical standards considered for IPS recruitment. The minimum height requirement varies depending on the candidate’s category.

Category Minimum Height
Male (General) 165 cm
Female (General) 150 cm
Male (SC/ST) 160 cm
Female (SC/ST) 145 cm

Candidates belonging to certain categories such as Gorkhas, Garhwalis, Kumaonis and specified tribal communities may be eligible for relaxation as prescribed by the Government of India.

IPS Chest Requirement

In addition to height, candidates are also required to satisfy the prescribed chest measurements.

Category Minimum Chest Expansion
Male 84 cm 5 cm
Female 79 cm 5 cm

The chest should be well developed with the prescribed minimum expansion during the medical examination.

IPS Vision Requirements

Candidates allocated to the Indian Police Service must also satisfy the prescribed vision standards.

The broad vision requirements include:

  • Good binocular vision.
  • High-grade colour vision.
  • Eyes should be free from serious diseases or defects that may interfere with police duties.
  • Candidates may use corrective lenses where permitted under the applicable medical standards.

The detailed medical examination is conducted only by the authorities designated by the Government, and the final decision regarding medical fitness rests with the Medical Board.
