The Chicago Convention was signed in 1944 by delegates from 54 nations and laid the foundation for the international civil aviation system. This landmark agreement established ICAO, a specialized UN agency, with the intent to coordinate and regulate international air transport.
The Convention’s preamble underlines that developing international civil aviation enables “friendship and understanding among nations and peoples of the world.” This principle remains central to ICAO’s mission today.

With the adoption of Agenda 2030 by the United Nations, International Civil Aviation Day has gained additional significance. Aviation acts as an essential medium for global connectivity, aligning with the objectives of the Chicago Convention to promote peace and prosperity worldwide.
Every five years, ICAO chooses a special anniversary theme that coincides with its anniversaries (e.g., 2014, 2019, 2024). For the years between anniversaries, a single theme is chosen for the entire four-year period.
The United Nations has announced the theme for International Civil Aviation Day 2024 as “Safe Skies. Sustainable Future: Together for the next 80 years.” This theme marks the 80th anniversary of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, signed in 1944.
