The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), observed annually on December 3, is a global initiative to promote awareness and inclusivity for people with disabilities. Established by the United Nations in 1992, this day seeks to foster understanding, promote empowerment, and ensure the rights of individuals with disabilities. In India, where over 26.8 million people (Census 2011) live with some form of disability, this day holds special significance.
The theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.” Each year focuses on a unique aspect of inclusivity and empowerment. The theme emphasizes that people with disabilities should actively participate in shaping their lives, inspired by the global disability rights movement’s slogan, “Nothing About Us Without Us”.
