Context: 

Nari Shakti Puraskars is conferred on 8th March on the occasion of International Women’s Day (IWD).

About Nari Shakti Puraskars – National Award for Women 

The Ministry of Women & Child Development celebrates International Women’s Day (8th March) by conferring ‘Nari Shakti Puraskars’ every year to individuals and institutions in recognition of their service towards the cause of women empowerment, especially vulnerable and marginalized women.

  • Aim: To acknowledge the achievements of women for the nation and recognize their contributions to society. 
    • “Nari Shakti Puraskars” showcase the Government’s commitment towards women with the aim of strengthening their position in society.
  • Objective: To recognize and encourage women to participate in all spheres, and issues related to women have gained utmost importance and focused attention. 
    • It  provides an opportunity for Young Indians to understand the contribution of women in building society and the nation.
    • It  inspires individuals & institutions to follow the league of awardees.
  • Ceremony: Nari Shakti Puraskar is presented by the President of India on International Women’s Day on March 8th at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
    • Nari Shakti Puraskar was instituted in 1999 under the name of Stree Shakti Puraskar.
    • The awards were renamed and re-organised in 2015. 
    • The awards are conferred in six institutional and two individual categories.
  • Number Of Awards: The maximum number of awards (including individual and institutional) would be 30. 
    • The Award in each category shall carry a certificate and a cash amount of rupees one lakh.

Nari Shakti Puraskars Eligibility and Selection Journey

  • Nari Shakti Puraskars awards are open to all individuals and institutions.
    • Individual Category: Awardee must be at least 25 years of age on the last date of receipt of nomination.
    • For an Institution:  Worked in the relevant field for at least 5 years.
    • The applicant should not be a recipient of the same award earlier (including Stree Shakti Puraskars as were awarded by the Ministry).
  • Nari Shakti Puraskar Field:

    • Economic and social empowerment of women.
    • Effective implementation of women-related legislations.
    • Gender mainstreaming and positive actions in favour of women. 
    • Encouraged women to participate in decision-making roles.
    • Encouraged women’s skill development in traditional and non-traditional sectors.
    • Facilitated basic amenities for rural women.
    • Promoted women in non-traditional sectors like science and technology, sports, art, culture, etc.
  • Nari Shakti Puraskars award shall also be given to a State or Union Territory, which has appreciably improved Child Sex Ratio (CSR).
  • Nominations: The Nominations would be sent to the Ministry of Women and Child Development with details as per application form (Annexure-I) along with supporting documents as mentioned in the application form.
  • Screening of Nominations: It shall be constituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to scrutinize and short list the nominations received for the Awards considering the achievements of the individuals and institutions.
  • Selection of Awardees by the Selection Committee: A Selection Committee shall be constituted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to select the awardees on the basis of recommendation of the Screening Committee:

  • Nari Shakti Puruskar are distributed in 6 institutional categories and 2 individual categories. They are:

Institutional Categories

  • Rani Lakshmi Bai Award: 
  • It is given to the institution that has contributed to the research and development in the field of women empowerment
  • Rani Gaidinliu Zeliang Award: 
  • It is given to the Civil Society Organisation for doing outstanding work for the welfare and well-being of women.
  • Mata Jijabai Award:
  • Kannagi Devi Award: 
  • It is given to state who has improved their Child Sex Ratio
  • Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Award:
  • It is given to institutes that work for the wellbeing of women.
  • Rani Rudrama Devi Awards: 
  • It is given to two district panchayats and two gram panchayats for their contribution in their area regarding the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana or Scheme.

Individual Categories

  • For courage and bravery 
  • For making outstanding contributions to women’s endeavour, community work, or making a difference, or women’s empowerment.

Celebrating the Achievements of Nari Shakti Puraskar Winners (2020-2021): 

President Ram Nath Kovind granted the Nari Shakti Puraskar on 8th March 2022 for 2020 and 2021. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the award ceremony could not occur in 2021. In total, 29 women were presented with 28 awards, 14 for each year. The list of recipients is as follows:
