Every year, Navratri is celebrated with a whole lot of pomp and grandeur all across the country. The Navratri festival of 2023 will commence on Thursday, October 15th 2023, and conclude on Friday, October 24th 2023.

  • About: It is a Hindu festival associated with divine feminine. The festival is celebrated over nine days, with each day dedicated to nine avatars of Goddess Durga.
  • Celebration: The festival is celebrated twice a year, with the first Navratri falling in the month of Chaitra and the second in the month of Sharad.

  • Historical Evolution: It evolved as a festival to celebrate victory of good over evil forces. The legend of Mahishasura’s killing marked the victory of feminine power.
  • The Mythological Roots of Navratri:

    • The killing of Mahishasura: The main story associated with it is the battle that took place between goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura.
      • Mahishasura was gifted with immortality and could be killed only by a woman. Gods came together to create Goddess Durga to kill Mahishasura.
      • The battle lasted nine days and nights and hence the festival lasts for nine days and nights. Navratri ends with Dussehra, which marks the victory of good over evil.
    • Victory of Raavan: There is also a belief that Lord Ram emerged victorious over Raavan on the day of Dussehra.
      • Hence, the day is celebrated by burning effigies of Raavan, marking the victory of good over evil.

    • Ramlila: In parts of north India Ramlila, which is a dance-drama depicting the life of Lord Ram, is organized which starts on the first day of Navratri and ends on the occasion of ‘Dusserah’.

    • Caste equality: People belonging to any caste or creed are welcome to participate in Navratri festival.

Diverse Navratri Celebrations in India: Garba, Durga Puja, and Ayudha Puja Traditions

  • Gujarati Garba Celebrations

    • In the state of Gujarat, Navaratri celebrations are constituted by arti, followed by garba, which is a traditional dance associated with Shakti worship.
    • Dandiya Raas, which involves dancing with dandiya sticks, is also performed.
  • West Bengal’s Durga Puja

    • In Eastern India, especially West Bengal, Navratri is synonymous with Durga Puja. Idol of goddess Durga is worshiped for nine days, followed by ritual immersion on the tenth day.
  • South Indian Ayudha Puja

    • Saraswati Puja: In many places goddess Saraswati is worshiped through Ayudha Puja. It falls on the ninth day of Navratri.
    • Tools and Weapon worship: Ayudha Puja also involves people worshiping their tools and weapons of their trade.

  • Kamakhya temple: This temple has been constructed through a combination of the traditional nagara and Saracenic (Mughal style of architecture). This is called the Nilachala Style of Architecture.
  • Kalighat Temple: It has been constructed in a traditional Bengali medieval style of temple architecture.

  • Naina Devi Temple:  The temple is built in a pagoda style in the center and accompanied by a beautiful white marble facade.
  • Meenakshi Temple: The temple is constructed in a traditional Dravidian style of architecture.
  • Mahalakshmi Temple: The temple is built in a Chalukya style, which is a combination of Nagara and Dravida architecture styles.
