Procedure of Sahitya Akademi Award

The award process involves a meticulous and transparent multi-level evaluation:

1. General Guidelines

Subject to the provision of rule 1(2), an award is given each year for the most outstanding original book by an Indian author. The book must be published in India and in one of the languages recognized by the Sahitya Akademi. It should be first published within the five years preceding the award year.

Example: For the 2004 award, books published between 1998 and 2002 were considered.

Then, a ground list is prepared by two experts for each language.

2. Criteria for Eligibility

  • The book must be a creative or critical work of high literary merit.
  • The following are not eligible:
    • Translations, anthologies, abridged works, or compilations.
    • Research works for academic purposes or previous winners of the main Sahitya Akademi Award.
    • Authors who are members of the Executive Board or Fellows of the Akademi.
  • A revised edition is eligible only if 75% of the work is new.
  • Posthumous works are eligible if the author died within the stipulated five-year period.

3. Preparation of Ground List

A ground list of eligible books is prepared annually by two experts for each language. Members of the Language Advisory Board recommend titles based on the ground list or their own preferences. The list is finalized and sent for further evaluation.

4. Preliminary Panel Review:

The recommendations are sent to a Preliminary Panel comprising 10 scholars in that language for review. Each referee recommends two books, which may be from the ground list or their own selection.

These recommendations are compiled and sent to the Jury.

The Jury’s recommendation is sent to the Executive Board for formal approval. The award is announced publicly, along with the names of Jury members and the shortlisted books.
