Dr. Manoj Soni, born on February 17, 1965, in Mumbai, is an esteemed educationist currently holding the position of Chairman of the UPSC. Having joined the Commission on June 28, 2017, he assumed the role of chairman on April 5, 2022, succeeding his predecessor, Pradeep Kumar Joshi.

  • Prior to his appointment as UPSC Chairman, Dr. Soni was actively involved in academia, teaching International Relations at Sardar Patel University (SPU), Vallabh Vidyanagar. He is a distinguished scholar in political science, with a specialization in international relations.
  • Throughout his career, he has served as Vice-Chancellor of both Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU) and Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU Baroda). Additionally, Dr. Soni has contributed to various institutions of higher education and public administration as a board member.
  • Notably, he is also associated with the Anoopam Mission of the Swaminarayan movement in Gujarat, where he serves as a monk and Nishkam Karmayogi (selfless worker).

  • Dr. Manoj Soni, born on February 17, 1965, faced early hardships when he lost his father during his time in Class 5. His father, a street hawker selling semi-finished clothing on the streets of Mumbai, passed away, prompting Dr. Manoj to take up selling incense sticks in Mumbai’s chawls to support his family and fund his education.
  • In 1978, his mother made the decision to move from Anand in Gujarat to Mumbai, seeking better opportunities. Despite not clearing his Class 10 examination, Dr. Manoj pursued Arts at Raj Ratna PT Patel College. His passion for Political Science and a specialization in International Relations (IR) led him to become a scholar in the field.
  • From 1991 to 2016, Dr. Manoj imparted his knowledge of IR as a professor at Sardar Patel University (SPU), Vallabh Vidyanagar. At the remarkable age of 40, he achieved the distinction of becoming the Vice-Chancellor of The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, making him the youngest VC in the country.
  • Beyond academia, Dr. Manoj is an accomplished author, having penned the book “Understanding the Global Political Earthquake.” His remarkable journey has now led him to the esteemed position of the 31st Chairman of the UPSC.
