States and Capitals of India 2024 and Recent Developments & Evolving Borders and Capitals 

  • 2019: A significant change happened in India when the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act was enacted. It marked October 31 as a special day for the creation of two Union Territories, J&K and Ladakh. This was a unique event because no state had ever been split into two Union Territories before. Starting from January 26, 2020, India now has 8 Union Territories alongside its existing 28 states.
  • 2020: January 26th, Daman and Diu merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli to form a single Union Territory.

Interestingly, some states like Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand have separate legislative assemblies in different capital cities for their summer and winter sessions. Similarly, Ladakh has two administrative capitals, Leh and Kargil.

  1. On January 26th, Daman and Diu merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli to become a single union territory.
  2. This merger happened because of a Bill passed in the winter session of Parliament, and now there are eight Union Territories in India.
  3. Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand have different capital cities for summer and winter legislative sessions.
  4. Ladakh has two administrative capitals, Leh and Kargil.
  5. In 2024, India is a federal union comprising 28 states and 8 union territories, comprising 36 distinct entities.
  6. The states and union territories are divided into districts and other administrative divisions.
  7. Each state in India has its own administrative, judicial, and legislative centers. Sometimes, all three functions are carried out in the same capital city.
