GANDHIAN PRINCIPLES: DIRECTIVE PRINCIPLES OF STATE POLICY

Introduction

The Gandhian principles within the Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) in India are rooted in the ideology and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, the iconic leader of India’s independence movement. These principles represent a program of reconstruction outlined by Gandhi during the national struggle for independence. Gandhi envisioned a decentralized, self-sufficient, and morally upright society where power is decentralized to the grassroots level and economic development is rooted in principles of sustainability and equitable distribution of resources.

The following articles from directive principles which represent Gandhian philosophy.

Article 40
  • To organize village Panchayats (grassroots-level democracy) and endow them with the necessary powers and authority to enable them to function as units of self-government.
  • 73rd CAA, 1992: Constitutional recognition to Panchayats (Part IX, Schedule 11).
Article 43
  • Promote cottage industries on an individual or co-operative basis in rural areas.
Article 43B
Article 46
  • To promote the educational and economic interests of SCs, STs and other weaker sections of society, the state shall protect them from social injustice and exploitation.
Article 47
  • Prohibit the consumption except for medicinal purposes of intoxicating drinks and drugs
Article 48
  • Prohibit the slaughter of cows, calves and other milch and drought cattle and improve their breeds.
