Why Do We Celebrate United Nations Day?

However, in order to recognize the UN’s efforts in fostering global peace, tackling humanitarian crises, promoting sustainable development, and protecting human rights, United Nations Day is celebrated. It also serves as an opportunity to reaffirm the global community’s commitment to these ideals.

United Nations History

It’s important to understand the significance of United Nations Day 2024. The UN was established in response to the devastation of World War II, with the goal of preventing future conflicts on a global scale. In April 1945, representatives from 50 countries met in San Francisco to draft the United Nations Charter, which was signed on June 26, 1945. 

The UN officially came into existence on October 24, 1945, following ratification by key nations, including the five permanent members of the Security Council.

How Many Members Are in the UN?

As of 2024, the United Nations has 193 member states, which represent nearly every sovereign nation in the world. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has 5 permanent members, often referred to as the P5, and 10 non-permanent members. The P5 members hold veto power, giving them significant influence in decision-making processes.
