The English and language papers in UPSC Mains are considered of a qualifying nature. This means that while you must attempt these papers, their scores are primarily used to assess your language proficiency and ensure you meet the minimum language requirements for the civil services.
All candidates are required to take an examination in one of the Indian languages, with the exception of candidates from Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, and Meghalaya. The list of Indian languages for the UPSC Mains Language Paper includes Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali.
