The UPSC Prelims previous year’s analysis can vary each year based on factors like the number of applications, the difficulty level questions, the vacancies, and the performances of candidates. Looking at the data, we can see that the cutoff marks vary a lot from year to year and for different categories. This lack of consistency shows that competition is tough and the exam standards are changing.
Every year, UPSC tries to evolve the question pattern. In UPSC CSE 2023, the CSAT became harder, and in the GS 1 paper, some questions were designed in a way that eliminated the effectiveness of elimination techniques. This shows that the difficulty and competitiveness of the exam are increasing. Therefore, it’s important to be prepared for the unpredictable nature of the UPSC exams.
Below are the cutoff scores for the UPSC preliminary exam over the past five years:
Year | General | EWS | OBC | SC | ST |
2023 | 75.41 | 68.02 | 74.75 | 59.25 | 47.82 |
2022 | 88.22 | 82.83 | 87.54 | 69.35 | 74.08 |
2021 | 87.54 | 80.14 | 84.85 | 75.41 | 70.71 |
2020 | 92.51 | 77.55 | 89.12 | 74.84 | 68.71 |
2019 | 98 | 90 | 95.34 | 82 | 77.34 |
2018 | 98 | – | 96.66 | 84 | 83.34 |
The UPSC preliminary exam is crucial and serves as a qualifying test. Candidates are advised to review the results of toppers and their prelim marksheets to understand the score needed to excel in upcoming exams. Waiting for the prelims result is not recommended. After a short break following the prelims, it’s best to start preparing for the mains without delay. Time shouldn’t be wasted, as only the marks from the mains can determine one’s success in obtaining the desired post.
