UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2027

The UPSC Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type papers conducted on the same day. While General Studies Paper I determines merit for qualifying to the Mains examination, CSAT (Paper II) is qualifying in nature and requires candidates to secure the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by UPSC.

Paper Marks Nature
General Studies Paper I 200 Considered for merit
CSAT (General Studies Paper II) 200 Qualifying in nature (Minimum 33% required)

General Studies Paper I includes questions from subjects such as:

  • History
  • Geography

  • Environment
  • Science and Technology
  • Current Affairs

CSAT evaluates your skills in:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Analytical Ability
  • Decision Making
  • Basic Numeracy
  • Data Interpretation

The CSAT paper is qualifying in nature. You must secure the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by UPSC for Paper II while your General Studies Paper I score determines eligibility for the Civil Services Main Examination.

Negative Marking in UPSC Prelims

UPSC follows a negative marking system for both papers of the Preliminary Examination. Candidates should answer questions carefully, as incorrect responses reduce the overall score.

  • One-third (1/3) of the marks assigned to a question are deducted for every incorrect answer.
  • In General Studies Paper I, each question carries 2 marks, so 0.66 marks are deducted for every wrong answer.
  • In CSAT (General Studies Paper II), each question carries 2.5 marks, so 0.83 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer.
  • If more than one option is marked for a question, it is treated as an incorrect answer and the applicable negative marking is applied.
  • There is no negative marking for unattempted questions.
