White Revolution 2.0, New Features, and Milkman of India

White Revolution 2.0: India’s dairy industry is undergoing a significant transformation with the launch of White Revolution 2.0 by the Ministry of Cooperation on September 19, 2024. This initiative aims to enhance milk production, improve productivity, and strengthen the dairy infrastructure across the nation.

Production of milk in 2023-24 is  239.30 Million metric tonnes, which is 63.56% over last 10 years. India holds the top position globally in milk production and the largest consumer of milk and milk products worldwide.

What is White Revolution 2.0?

White Revolution 2.0 was launched on September 19, 2024, by the Ministry of Cooperation to enhance milk production, productivity, and dairy infrastructure across India. This initiative builds on the success of the original White Revolution led by Dr. Verghese Kurien, which made India the world’s largest milk producer. The primary aim of White Revolution 2.0 is to boost dairy farming, support cooperative societies, improve milk processing capacity, and ensure better income for farmers.

Original White Revolution

The original White Revolution, spearheaded by Dr. Verghese Kurien, also known as the “Milkman of India,” revolutionized India’s dairy sector in the 1970s. It led to the establishment of the cooperative movement and transformed India into the world’s largest milk producer.

Objectives of White Revolution 2.0

White Revolution 2.0 focuses on:

  • Development and Conservation of Indigenous Breeds: Implementing the Rashtriya Gokul Mission to preserve and enhance native bovine breeds.
  • Genetic Upgradation: Improving the genetic makeup of the bovine population to boost milk yield and quality.
  • Infrastructure Enhancement: Strengthening milk procurement and processing facilities through various dairy development schemes.

The Dairy Sector of India

The dairy sector is a vital branch of agriculture that focuses on breeding, raising, and utilizing dairy animals, primarily cows, for milk production. This milk is then processed into various dairy products such as butter, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. The dairy industry plays a crucial role in India’s economy, contributing 5% to the national GDP. Largest Milk-Producing States Rajasthan (15.05%), Uttar Pradesh (14.93%), Madhya Pradesh (8.6%), Gujarat (7.56%), and Andhra Pradesh (6.97%) together account for 53.11% of India’s total milk production.
Dairy Exports (2023-24) India exported 63,738.47 MT of dairy products, valued at $272.64 million.
Top Importing Countries United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, USA, Singapore, Bhutan.
Milk Processing Capacity India has the highest milk processing capacity in the world, at 126 million liters per day.
Processed Milk Percentage 22% of India’s total milk production is processed into value-added dairy products.

Key Dairy Development Schemes

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) is implementing several schemes:

  1. National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD): Aims to create and strengthen infrastructure for milk procurement, processing, and marketing.
  2. Supporting Dairy Cooperatives & Farmer Producer Organisations (SDCFPO): Provides assistance to dairy cooperatives and FPOs to enhance their operations and market reach.
  3. Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF): Offers financial support for setting up dairy processing and value addition infrastructure.

Impact on Dairy Cooperatives

These initiatives have led to the establishment and strengthening of approximately 2.35 lakh dairy cooperative societies across India. The goal is to increase cooperative sector milk procurement to 1,007 lakh kilograms per day by 2028-29.

Milk Production and Per Capita Availability

In the fiscal year 2023-24, India’s milk production reached 239.30 million metric tonnes, marking a 63.56% increase over the last decade. The per capita availability of milk stands at 459 grams per day.

Karnataka’s Dairy Sector Initiatives

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has undertaken several measures:

  • Expansion of Cooperative Societies: As of 2024-25, KMF operates 15,888 dairy cooperative societies, covering approximately 24,000 villages.
  • Increased Milk Procurement: Average milk procurement rose from 51.61 lakh kilograms per day (LKgPD) in 2013-14 to 82.98 LKgPD in 2023-24.
  • Awareness and Training: Initiatives to educate farmers on best practices, particularly in northern Karnataka, focusing on improving milk quality and production efficiency.
