The 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting will be held in Tonga Island whereby the Pacific leaders will discuss as their agenda a multitude of issues affecting their region.
About the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting
- Location: The Pacific Islands Forum Meeting will be held in the Tonga capital city of Nuku’alofa.
- Theme: A Transformative and Resilient Pasifiki: Build Better Now
- Agenda of Discussion: A Polycrisis is in the making for the collective Economic, social, security, environmental and political aspects for the pacific island countries. Some crisis being in the agenda for discussion are,
- Climate change: The South Pacific is considered one of the most climate-threatened pockets of the planet with low-lying nations such as Tuvalu predicted to be almost entirely swallowed by rising oceans within the next 30 years.
- Great Power Rivalries: China and The USA have taken their rivalry to a new playground courting the island countries with infrastructure aid (government offices,hospitals, highways etc), financial aid, bilateral agreements etc.
- The chinese military presence is a concern with the USA group.
- Unrest in New Caledonia: New Caledonia (French Territory) a full forum member’s unresolved crisis and violent unrest against France also is a topic of discussion
- The Pacific Islands Forum has been trying to send a team of observers to take the pulse in New Caledonia’s riot-crippled capital Noumea.
