UPSC Law Optional Advantages and Disadvantages

Choosing Law as an optional subject for the UPSC Civil Services Examination has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Here’s an overview of both:

Advantages of Choosing Law as an Optional Subject:

Overlap with General Studies: Law as an optional subject offers significant overlap with various General Studies (GS) papers in both the prelims and mains exams. In the prelims, topics related to Indian polity, governance, public policy, Panchayati Raj, and more are areas where law students can excel. The number of questions asked from these topics in recent years indicates their relevance:

  • 2017: 22 questions
  • 2016: 6 questions
  • 2015: 12 questions
  • 2014: 11 questions
  • 2013: 18 questions

In the mains exam, all GS papers have some commonalities with the law syllabus. These include areas like the Indian Constitution, federal structure, separation of powers, governance, and various Constitutional provisions. This overlap can make the preparation process more efficient for candidates choosing law as their optional.

Overlap with Essay Paper: The essay paper often includes topics with a connection to law. Candidates with a background in law can provide a legal perspective in their essays, which can enhance their scores. Some essay topics that have links to the law optional syllabus include issues related to justice, water disputes between states, transparency in public administration, judicial activism, economic growth and distributive justice, reservation, privacy concerns, and more.

Disadvantages of Choosing Law as an Optional Subject:

While law can be a scoring subject, it may not offer as high a scoring potential as some of the science optionals, although scores of up to 150 are achievable with sincere effort.

Non-law graduates may find certain aspects of the subject, especially in Paper II, to be challenging or unfamiliar.

There is a limited availability of high-quality test series and study materials for law compared to more popular optionals, which can pose a challenge for candidates seeking additional resources and guidance.
