On August 10, 2020, Nitish Kumar took his oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar, while Tejashwi Yadav will be the Deputy Chief Minister for the state. The Janata Dal (U), led by Nitish Kumar, collaborated with the Rashtriya Janata Dal, headed by Tejashwi Yadav, to establish a coalition government, resulting in their joint leadership. Despite the Governor officially holding the executive head position in the state according to the Indian Constitution, the Chief Minister possesses the actual executive authority.

Bihar has seen a total of 23 Chief Ministers in its history. The first Chief Minister of Bihar was Sri Krishna Sinha, who held the position for a remarkable 14 years and 304 days. In contrast, the Chief Minister with the briefest term was Satish Prasad Singh, who served for merely five days in 1968.

The Governor appoints the Chief Minister, and the council of ministers they lead is answerable to the assembly as a whole. What matters most is that they hold the assembly’s trust and confidence. Chief Minister serves for five years, and there isn’t a set limit to how many terms they can have. Chief Ministers of Bihar Facts for UPSC

  • Following the conviction of Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, in the Fodder Scam case in 1997, his wife Rabri Devi assumed the position. Collectively, Rabri Devi and Lalu Prasad Yadav governed Bihar for approximately 15 years.
  • The process of electing members for the Bihar Legislative Assembly took place during the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly Election, spanning from October 28, 2020, to November 7, 2020.
  • Starting from February 22, 2015, Nitish Kumar has held the current position of Chief Minister. On August 10, 2022, Nitish Kumar was inaugurated and sworn in as the Chief Minister for the eighth time.
