UN Women and the United Nations Department of Economic & Social Affair (UN DESA) released the Gender Snapshot 2025 report.

Key Global Findings

  • Poverty: 351 million women and girls projected to remain in extreme poverty by 2030.
  • Stalled Progress: Female poverty has remained around 10% since 2020.
  • Conflict Exposure: 676 million women and girls lived within 50 km of deadly conflict in 2024 — highest since the 1990s.
  • Food Insecurity: 64 million more women than men were food insecure in 2024.
  • Health and Education
    • Maternal Mortality: 39% reduction since 2000.
    • Child Marriage: Decline from 22% (2014) to 18.6% (2024) of women married before 18.
    • Violence: 1 in 8 women aged 15–49 faced physical/sexual violence from an intimate partner in 2024.
  • Representation and Work
    • Political Leadership: Women hold less than one-third of parliamentary seats worldwide; 102 countries have never had a woman head of state/government.
    • Managerial Roles: Gender parity in leadership could take nearly a century at current rates.
    • Unpaid Work: Women spend 2.5 times more hours on unpaid care and domestic work than men.

India’s context:

  • Political Representation: Women hold 82 out of 543 seats (15%) in Lok Sabha; Women’s Reservation Bill (2023) aims to increase it to 33% once implemented.
  • Leadership Roles: Underrepresentation persists in judiciary, bureaucracy, and corporate boards.

Digital Divide and Economic Impact

  • Digital Exclusion: Internet use in 2024 — 70% men vs 65% women.
  • Economic Potential: Closing the digital gap could benefit 343 million women by 2050, lift 30 million from poverty, and add $1.5 trillion to global GDP by 2030.

Emerging Threats

  • Climate Change: Worst-case scenario could push 158 million more women into extreme poverty by 2050.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Women’s jobs more vulnerable to AI disruption (27.6%) compared with men’s (21.1%).

Policy Recommendations and Action Agenda

  • UN Call to Action: Accelerated interventions in education, care economy, green jobs, and social protection could reduce extreme poverty among women by 110 million by 2050.
  • Economic Return: Estimated $342 trillion in cumulative gains if gender equality investments are prioritised.
  • Beijing+30 Action Agenda: Ahead of the UNGA, six urgent priorities reaffirmed — eliminating violence, eradicating poverty, ensuring equal leadership, advancing climate justice, digital inclusion, and universal access to rights.
  • Leadership Appeal: UN Women urged governments to commit decisive investments towards gender equality.

Policy and Institutional Measures taken in India

  • Government Schemes: Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Stand-Up India, MUDRA loans, and Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (DISHA) target women’s empowerment.
  • Legal Reforms: Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017 increased paid maternity leave to 26 weeks.
