G20 Countries: The G20, or the Group of 20, is a group of 19 countries along with the European Union and African Union that come together to discuss and tackle important global economic issues. These issues include things like making sure the world’s finances are stable, finding ways to combat climate change, and promoting sustainable development.

The Group of Twenty (G20) stands as the primary platform for international economic cooperation, shouldering a pivotal responsibility in guiding the global economy through its formidable challenges.

The G20’s enduring role in shaping and fortifying global architecture and governance across a spectrum of crucial international economic matters remains undeniably significant.

Since its inception in 1999, following the Global Financial Crisis of 1997-98, the G20 has convened annually. Leaders have been gathering for the G20 Leaders’ Summit since 2008, with a calendar filled with ministerial meetings, sherpa meetings, working groups, and special events throughout the year.

The G20 is made up of the finance ministries of some of the world’s biggest economies, both from developed and developing nations. In fact, these countries combined contribute to about 80% of the world’s total economic output, and 75% of all international trade, and are home to about two-thirds of the world’s population. They also cover about 60% of the world’s total land area.

The G20 members comprise the following member nations: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union and African Union. Additionally, Spain holds a permanent invitation as a guest country.

This influential assembly unites the world’s foremost and systemically significant economies, collectively representing a staggering 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population.

In 2023, India takes the helm as the G20 presidency holder, offering an events calendar on the official Indian Government’s website. Indonesia presided over the G20 in 2022, culminating in the release of the G20 Bali Leaders’ Declaration on November 16, 2022. Looking ahead, Brazil is set to host the G20 in 2024, followed by South Africa in 2025.
