The job of an IAS Officer is critical for the functioning of the government. This is the reason why there is an overwhelming curiosity about the IAS Officer salary.   • Maximum Salary of an IAS Officer: The salary obtained by the cabinet secretary, which is the higher position for an IAS Officer, is about ₹2,50,000. 
  • Latest Pay Structure of IAS Officer: The pay structure of an IAS Officer is based on the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission and varies from junior grade to above super time scale. 
  • Apart from the basic salary, they also receive Dearness Allowance (DA), which is revised on a half-yearly basis depending on the inflation index.

Allowances for IAS Officers: Understanding Compensation Beyond Basic Salary

Apart from their basic salary, IAS Officers are entitled to a certain amount as allowance to cover their expenses. Some of such allowances are:

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): Dearness Allowance is a component of their basic salary, aimed at negating the impact of inflation. It is revised regularly.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): It is the monetary grant for their residential purpose. It depends on the city they serve and generally ranges between 8% to 24% of the basic pay.
  • Travelling Allowance (TA): It is the monetary amount received by an IAS Officer to cover travelling cost for his/her official purposes.
  • Medical Allowance: It is the amount sanctioned for their medical treatment. IAS Officers can get it reimbursed in case of medical treatment.

  • Residential Place: IAS Officers are allowed to stay in government-owned accommodation with low or no rent. They can also avail the services of domestic help.
  • Expenditure Bills: IAS Officers receive electricity, gas, water, phone connections at low or no cost, thus reducing their out-of-pocket expenditure.
  • Free Transport: IAS Officers are provided one or more vehicles with chauffeurs for official purposes to travel within their area of administration.

  • The salary of an IAS and IPS Officer in a similar position is the same
  • The entry level salary of an IAS Officer and IPS Officer is ₹56,100, excluding the TA, DA and HRA. 
  • Similarly, the salary of the top-level IAS Officer (Cabinet Secretary) and top level IPS Officer (DGP) is ₹2,50,000.

IAS vs IFS: Salary Comparison

  • According to available data, IFS salary is comparatively lower than IAS. 
  • An IAS Officer’s salary starts from ₹56,100 while that of an IFS Officer starts from ₹ 15,600-39,100. 
  • The salary of the top-most IAS Officer is ₹2,50,000 while that of IFS Officer is ₹90,000. 
  • IFS Officers posted in different foreign countries receive variable foreign allowance, making a significant difference to their salary amount.
