Body

Existential Threat from China

  • Economic Rivalry: China has emerged as America’s principal economic competitor, challenging its dominance in global trade and supply chains.
Eg: China is the largest trading partner for most Indo-Pacific economies, limiting U.S. influence.
  • Technological Challenge: China is rapidly advancing in critical technologies, threatening U.S. leadership in AI and advanced manufacturing.
  • Military Competition: The U.S. maintains alliances through the Quad and AUKUS to balance China’s expanding military capabilities.
  • Global Influence: China is expanding its diplomatic and economic footprint across Asia and beyond, reducing U.S. strategic leverage.
Eg: Belt and Road Initiative projects and the “String of Pearls” network have strengthened China’s regional presence.
  • Strategic Contest: China seeks to reshape the international order by offering an alternative model of economic and political influence.

Why More Challenging than the Soviet Union

  • Economic Integration: Unlike the isolated Soviet economy, China is deeply integrated into global trade and supply chains.
  • Trade Dependence: Many U.S. allies depend economically on China despite security partnerships with Washington.
  • Technology Edge: China competes with the U.S. in frontier technologies instead of relying solely on military power.
Eg: Competition in AI and critical technologies has become central to the U.S.-China rivalry.
  • Global Reach: China’s influence extends through infrastructure financing, investment and connectivity rather than ideology alone.
Eg: China has expanded influence via CPEC, Hambantota Port and Gwadar Port.
  • Costly Containment: Containing China entails significant economic and military costs because of mutual interdependence.

Way Forward

  • Responsible Competition: Balance strategic competition with cooperation on shared global challenges.
  • Strengthen Alliances: Reinforce trusted partnerships to maintain a stable Indo-Pacific balance.
Eg: Quad and AUKUS remain key pillars of regional security (MEA; U.S. State Department).
  • Technology Resilience: Build secure and diversified supply chains in critical technologies.
Eg: U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, 2022 promotes domestic semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Crisis Dialogue: Maintain military and diplomatic communication to prevent escalation.
  • Rules-Based Order: Promote international norms ensuring peaceful competition and respect for international law.
Eg: Upholding freedom of navigation and UNCLOS principles in the Indo-Pacific.
