Earth’s Carpet with the In-Depth Exploration in the Study of Geography

Study Of Geography as an independent subject. A pertinent question to be asked while studying Geography is — Why should we study geography? The answer is that we live on the surface of the earth and our lives are affected by our surroundings in many ways and a study of Geography equips us to appreciate diversity and investigate into the causes responsible for creating such variations over time and space.

Geography Word Origin:

The English word, Geography has its origin in Greek, which relates to description of the Earth. It is made of two greek words “ge” meaning “Earth” and “graphia” meaning “Writing”.

Discovering Our World: Physical, Social, Environmental Features

  • Earth’s Varied Physical Features:  With the  Study of Geography of earth’s surface we found, it is not uniform.
    • It has variations in its physical features. There are mountains, hills, valleys, plains, plateaus, oceans, lakes, deserts, etc.
  • Diverse Social and Cultural Features: There are variations in its social and cultural features also.
    • There are villages, cities, roads, railways, ports, markets and many other elements created by human beings across the entire period of their cultural development.
  • Interconnection between Environment and Society: Study of Geography also reveals that the variation on earth provides a clue to the understanding of the relationship between the physical environment and social/cultural features.
  • Origin of the Term “Geography”: Geography is the description of the earth.
    • The term geography was first coined by Eratosthenes, a Greek scholar (276-194 BC). The word has been derived from two roots from Greek language geo (earth) and graphos (description)
    • Some Scholars have also defined geography as, “the description of the earth as the abode of human beings.
  • Geography is concerned with the description and explanation of the aerial differentiation of the earth’s surface. – Richard Hartshorne
  • Geography studies the differences of phenomena usually related in different parts of the earth’s surface. – Hettner

The Comprehensive Study of Geography and Its Distinctive Approach

  • Distinct Nature of Geography: Geography has a unique subject matter and methodology.
    • It maintains close ties with various other disciplines.
  • Data Sources: For the Study of Geography, we gather data from natural and social sciences.
    • It aims to synthesize information from these diverse sources.
  • Study of Earth’s Phenomena: Study of Geography focuses on a wide array of phenomena present on Earth.
    • It can be seen as the study of areal differentiation, examining variations across space.
  • Analyzing Phenomena Variations: Geographers not only observe spatial variations but also explore the factors causing these variations.
  • Causal Relationships: Geography seeks to uncover causal links between phenomena.
    • It goes beyond interpretation to predict future phenomena.

POINTS TO PONDER:

  • Initially, the discipline of Geography was limited to Physical Geography alone.
  • In due course, Human Geography was considered as an integral part of the discipline.

A Comprehensive Exploration in the Study of Earth’s Patterns and Dynamics and Interdependence Between Nature & Humans

  • Dynamic Nature of Geographical Phenomena: Geographical phenomena, whether natural or human, are not static.
    • They are highly dynamic and ever-changing.
  • Integrated Study of Nature and Human Interactions: Study of Geography explores the integrated relationship between nature and human activities.
    • Humans are an integral part of the natural world, and their actions leave imprints on nature.
  • Human Modification of Natural Environment: Contemporary societies have modified their environment through technology, altering the natural landscape.
    • Technology has expanded the utilization of natural resources.
  • Benefits of Technology: Technology enhances labor efficiency, allowing more time for higher-order needs.
    • It increases production scale and labor mobility.
    • Technology has liberated humans from mere necessity, providing greater freedom.
  • Humanized Nature and Naturalized Humans: Human activity has shaped and transformed the natural environment.
    • Technology has led to a coexistence of human culture and the natural world.
  • Geography’s Role as a Social Science Discipline: Study of Geography focuses on the spatial organization and integration of societies.
      • It examines the interactive relationship between humans and their environment.

Study of Geography  has Unfolded  the ‘What,’ ‘Where,’ and ‘Why’ of Spatial Inquiry

  • Geography as a discipline: It is concerned with three sets of questions:
    1. Identification of the patterns of natural and cultural features as found over the surface of the earth. These are the questions about what?
    2. Some questions are related to the distribution of the natural and human/cultural features over the surface of the earth. These are the questions about where?
    3. The causal relationships between features and the processes and phenomena. This aspect of geography is related to the question, why?
  • Study of Geography as a discipline is related to space and takes note of spatial characteristics and attributes.
  • It studies the patterns of distribution, location and concentration of phenomena over space and interprets them providing explanations for these patterns.

Field of Geography

Study Of Geography as an Integrating Discipline: A Holistic Exploration of Spatial Synthesis and Temporal Dimensions

  • Geography as a Discipline of Synthesis: Geography aims at spatial synthesis, while history focuses on temporal synthesis.
    • It takes a holistic approach, recognizing the world as a system of interdependencies.
  • Interdisciplinary Nature of Geography: Geography interfaces with various natural and social sciences.
    • All sciences, whether natural or social, share the common objective of understanding reality.
  • Geography’s Comprehensive Perspective: Geography aids in understanding reality from a spatial viewpoint.
    • It seeks to comprehend the associations among phenomena within the context of reality.
  • Broad Knowledge Base for Geographers: Geographers need a broad understanding of related fields to integrate them logically.
    • This integration enhances the comprehension of specific situations or scenarios.
  • Geographical Factors Influencing History: Geographical factors have shaped historical developments in different parts of the world.
    • In India, the Himalayas have acted as both barriers and routes for migrants and invaders from Central Asia.
    • The sea coast has facilitated contact with people from East and Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa.
    • Navigation technology enabled European countries to colonize various Asian and African countries, including India.
  • Temporal Dimension in Geography: Every geographical phenomenon undergoes temporal change and can be explained in a temporal context.
    • Time is considered the fourth dimension in geographical studies, alongside length, breadth, and width.
