The date commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa in 1915. Initially, the event was celebrated annually, but since 2015, it has been held biennially to allow for better planning and broader participation.
The primary aim of PBD is to strengthen the connection between India and its diaspora, recognizing their contributions in areas like trade, culture, technology, and innovation.
